YCP is a wonderful, faith-filled 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded 12 years ago and is growing across the country. They now have 31 chapters. (Seattle will be #32.) YCP brings together young adults (20’s & 30’s) and “seasoned” business professionals in a variety of programs to foster Catholic identity, encourage community and inspire action. Our mission is to challenge, train and inspire young adults working in various professions to “Work in Witness for Christ.” Here is a link for you to get a better glimpse of the program: https://www.youngcatholicprofessionals.org
We will have up to 12 events per year. They are planned and run by the young adult Leadership Team. They can be either social, spiritual or professional development focused (or any combination of the three.) We will also have at least one ½ to ¾ day retreat per year. As we grow and build, networking, mentoring, Sacraments and spiritual direction, and will be added to what the young adults can expect to be offered within YCP. Our goal is to attract practicing, non-practicing and lukewarm Catholics by having comfortable, welcoming events and then to encourage them to get involved with their respective parishes. Our local events will be attractive and relevant.
Even at a primarily social event, it will be obvious that we are Catholic and that we are a faith filled organization. Some have asked why we do not lead a scripture study, or have adoration or have a robust ongoing service project. We respond by pointing out that those important programs and events are already offered all over the Archdiocese and in their home parishes and are being done well. We don’t need to duplicate those efforts plus we always keep in mind our goal of having our attendees excited about their faith and to encourage them to go back into their parishes ready and willing to take an active role in witnessing to others. We invite them to gather some of their new YCP friends and get engaged at the parish level. Our emphasis is to inspire workers in the workplace to be bold Catholics and help them grow and mature in their faith from a business perspective. Few are doing that.
YCP uses the word, “professional” to mean those striving to perform meaningful work, whether as a carpenter, doctor, plumber, stay-at-home mom or dad, engineer or teacher. YCP’s patron, Saint Joseph, is held up as a model of virtue in the Church due to his dedication to his vocation as a simple carpenter and as the foster father of Christ. How good is that?
