A big and heartfelt thank you for the gracious welcome receptions our parishes have offered to Fr. Duc and me over the last three weeks. Your warm and kind hospitality makes us feel most welcome in our NE Seattle Catholic Community.
Hospitality to newcomers and strangers is a central part of the “Rule of St. Benedict,” which has guided the life of Benedictine Monastic Communities throughout the ages. Many of you perhaps do not know that the Benedictine Monks from St. Martin’s Abbey in Lacey staffed our own Assumption Parish until 1982 when diocesan priests took over to serve and continue to do so to the present.
The Rule of St. Benedict describes hospitality in this way: “Regard all visitors as Christ.” This precept of the Rule of St. Benedict applies not just to monasteries but to all Christian Communities, including our family of parishes. One of the things we can unite around is making our parishes places of welcome to everyone. So please join me in becoming an ambassador of welcome to all: young and old, rich and poor, long-time active Catholics, and those who have been inactive for a while. Let’s be a place of welcome to all minorities and families in whatever form they take, including immigrant families. Welcome to families who send their students to our Catholic Schools and those who attend public schools. Let’s be a place of welcome to teenagers and young adults, including those who question their faith. Let’s welcome other Christians, Jews, Muslims, and all people of faith and those with no faith. In our NE Seattle Catholic Community, all are welcome!
The Rule of Benedict bears repeating: Regard all visitors as Christ!
