Periodically, I flashback to my early experience of television which speaks in its own way to the present moment we live. One such memory is a show that ran on the BBC from 1962-63 titled “That Was the Week That Was.” It was a lighthearted review of events and people who had made the news that week. I think of the title of that show every year as the church invites us to prepare for “Holy Week.”
Talk about a week that was and still is relevant to our lives and the life of our world! Holy Week invites us to journey with Jesus as he enters Jerusalem to the cries of “Hosanna” from the crowds, many of whom will shout “Crucify him” a few days later. As his passion unfolds, Jesus gathers his disciples at the last supper to give them his body and blood in the form of bread and wine. The Eucharist from that moment on will carry with it the mandate to wash the feet of others in humble and generous service to the world. Jesus will powerfully exemplify that service by offering his life in love for the life of the world, a life that will be revealed again and again as we join our lives to his risen life.
Holy Week begins on April 2nd with Passion Palm Sunday. It continues with the sacred triduum April 6-9 of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the great Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday that flows into the joy of Easter Sunday. I encourage all members of the parish to participate in any and all of these special commemorations of the greatest week that ever was. It continues to celebrate the best of life that God always offers us. Please check our parish communications for the times for these liturgies, and invite your family, friends, and neighbors to join us! All are welcome!
Blessings of spring,
Fr. William Heric, Pastor
