At this point, our students in pre-k to 12th grades have begun their new school year. I hope and pray it is a year of grace and growth for all students. That includes the children who attend the “Kids Place” preschool program that is leasing space at St. Bridget’s this year. If you come to our parish center Monday-Friday between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm you may see 20 adorable 3 & 4-year-olds running around.
The “Back to School” season is also an opportunity for us at St. Bridget’s to celebrate the kick-off of “Back to church” this weekend. Church is a way of life that encourages us to live our Catholic Faith year-round, but this weekend September 9-10, we invite everyone to participate in two special celebrations meant to help us grow as a Catholic Community.
The first is our celebration of St. Phoebe Day at both Masses. Phoebe was a deaconess in the early church and a leader in the Christian Community at Corinth. Her memory invites us to recognize and celebrate the irreplaceable gifts that women bring to the life of the church, including their gifts of leadership. The Partners in the Gospel planning process of reorganizing parish life gives us an opportunity to creatively reexamine the role of women in church life. Our sisters in Christ historically have played a preeminent role of service in parish life. We need them now more than ever in roles of pastoral leadership in our local communities.
The call to serve applies to every member of our Christian community. The second special focus this weekend is a “Ministry Fair” following our 9:30 am Sunday Mass. There will be tables with sign-up opportunities to volunteer in various parish ministries such as altar servers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, sacristans, choir members, and hospitality ministers to name a few. There is something for everyone, so please stop by to explore a volunteer ministry. A reminder to our ASB families that your volunteer service at St. Bridget’s counts towards the 35 volunteer hours you are expected to give this school year.
