As I grow in my familiarity with the history of St. Bridget’s, I notice the usual turnover of families moving on from the parish and new ones joining the community. That goes for parish staff and priests as well, as I am the 9th pastor of St. Bridget’s in its 55-year history. Amid all these comings and goings, since 1979, one thing that has remained constant is the presence of Luanne Johnson. She registered in the parish in 1979 and became a regular participant at Sunday Mass and an active volunteer in many church ministries and organizations. Luanne joined the parish staff in 2000 and has served in various capacities, generously doing whatever needed to be done to help the community. Luanne’s role at St. Bridget’s as a paid staff has usually been part-time, but she has always donated her time beyond that. Whatever Luanne does at St. Bridget’s she does with a kindness and graciousness that has touched many people. I can’t imagine what the parish or I would have done without her.
Luanne has decided that with the coming of her second grandchild in the fall, it’s time to retire from most of her work for the parish to concentrate on her role as a doting grandparent. Her last day on staff will be July 31, although you will still see her at Mass volunteering in various liturgical ministries and coordinating coffee hour on Sundays, and the occasional receptions in the parish hall. The saints in our midst never really retire from serving the Lord.
We will gather to celebrate Luanne’s retirement and her many years of generous service to our parish with a special reception after the 9:30 am Mass on August13. Please plan on being present to thank Luanne for her ministry to our parish. One way to do that is to volunteer regularly in the various opportunities to serve at St. Bridget’s. Luanne would like that!
St. Bridget of Kildare…pray for us! Live Jesus in our hearts…forever!
